This file contains any last minute information, changes from
prior versions of GRAB Plus(tm) as well as some handy tips. Read
this file before installing your GRAB Plus(tm) system.
To print the manual type README at the DOS prompt. The program
README.COM is the documentation printer. It will also write the
file to disk if desired if a file name is entered when prompted
for the override name. There might not be enough room on the
distribution disk for writing the file to disk, therefore you
should not attempt to write the file to this disk. The file
created as well as this file may also be printed with the DOS
copy command as shown below.
COPY README. PRN:
SPECIAL NOTE TO POSTSCRIPT USERS:
Files cannot be printed as shown above. You must write the
manual to disk first by entering an override name when you run
README.COM. An example would be "C:GRAB.DOC" for the filename.
Then use the program PFPS.COM to print the documentation on your
printer. The command PFPS GRAB.DOC will print the file GRAB.DOC
on the PostScript printer. You may also print this file "README"
with this utility.
PFPS.COM is a PostScript file printer utility that was written by
Terry McGuire who is also a member of the Association of
Shareware Professionals. If you are a PostScript user and are
interested in a PostScript spooler, then pay attention to the
following. Terry has a PostScript spooler which will intercept
output from Non-PostScript programs, translate it into PostScript
language then print it on your PostScript printer. It will make
your Non-PostScript programs compatible with PostScript! For
more information on the PostScript spooler write to:

NEW FEATURES:
GRABDB will now check the data entry if the two letter state
abbreviation is entered. The reason is that when GRABDB formats
the address it does a translation to the full spelling of the
state name. You have access to a state name help window in this
field.
GRAB may be run without loading it into memory from the DOS
prompt if desired. The command would be GRAB /C to call it from
the DOS command line. This will allow you to print an address
without loading the program as a TSR. After GRAB pops up just
tap the manual entry command key to enter the address. After you
are finished printing GRAB will exit to DOS.
GRAB now shows all of the command keys in the GRAB instruction
window when popped up. This window has grown to a large size
with all of the commands shown so you may also turn it off and on
with the <F1> key.
We have added the special codes for using the new Hewlett-Packard
envelope trays. This is both the new tray for the LaserJet II as
well as the tray for the new LaserJet IID printers. Please
carefully read manuals on these trays from Hewlett-Packard as
well as the instructions for using these trays before attempting
to use them. The first step is to set the printer menu selection
as shown in the envelope tray user's guide for the COM-10
envelope size. We selected this size because with GRAB's ability
to move the address positions we have more flexibility in our
configuration for the small size envelopes. Also at this time
make sure you understand taking the printer off line and holding
the reset button down to reset the printer whenever you change
from your paper tray to your envelope tray. You will be allowed
to toggle between these special trays and the regular envelope
slot of the normal paper tray with the F2 key. There are no
special instructions for using the standard manual envelope feed
on the factory standard paper tray.
Along with the special LaserJet tray support we have also added
the ability to print "sideways" on Epson printers. This feature
allows users with narrow carriage printers to print their
envelopes.
Our foreign users may now turn off the non ascii character filter
in GRAB. This will allow them to print the foreign characters
required by their country. This option should not be used if you
are printing sideways on the Epson printers.
Postscript printer support is now available. The PostScript
printer is now included in the selection of available printers in
the installation program. Read the information in the manual
created by README.COM on setting up your PostScript printer.
The ability to edit the primary and alternate return addresses
while GRAB is popped up in your application is also new in this
version.
You may now test the print positions while in the GRABCFG
program. This new feature makes installation a snap! The option
is a sub-menu selection under the "Locations" menu selection.
There is a new addition to the disk for repairing a damaged data
file made by GRABDB.EXE. This program called FIXGDB.EXE will
reset the deleted record numbers and erase the index file. After
running FIXGDB.EXE you must run GRABDB.EXE to re-create the index
file. This small utility will usually recover a data file that
- 2 -
has been corrupted by a power outage or other unknown damage of
your data file. It is used by having the program in the same
directory and disk as your GRABDB.DAT data file. Just type the
filename FIXGDB followed by the enter key. After it is finished
it will tell you to run GRABDB.EXE to re-create your index file.
COMMON ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
Question - I found out that I sometimes have a problem when I
load GRAB after SideKick and enter GRABDB. It seems that GRABDB
"hangs up" and I have to restart the computer.
Answer - Load GRAB before SideKick. SideKick has a habit of
taking full control which sometimes causes little quirks like you
described. The safest bet is to never attempt to unload GRAB if
you are using SideKick. And since SideKick does request to be
the last TSR in line, by all means let it be. Also this is a
good time to point out that if you want GRAB to work within the
SideKick editor you MUST LOAD GRAB FIRST.
Question - I cannot get GRAB to print on my LaserJet printer?
Answer - You did not run GRABCFG the configuration program and
select the proper printer. GRAB comes configured for a plain
printer and you must make the necessary selection.
Question - I am using the LaserJet printer and the address is in
tiny print and to the left of the envelope. What is wrong?
Answer - Your printer is selecting the "line printer 16.66" type
style. This should not happen as we have put the codes into the
INIT Fonts string that forces "Fixed pitch and 10 CPI". If your
printer does this try one of the following instead of our
default: Put the following codes into the INIT Fonts string: 027
040 056 085. This will select the Roman-8 type face which is
normal. If that did not work try the codes 027 038 107 048 083
which selects 10 cpi.
Question - I am using the LaserJet II printer and the address
seems to print about 15 or so lines too low, What is wrong?
Answer - GRABCFG has both the LaserJet and the LaserJet II
printers available. It sounds as though you have selected the
LaserJet and not the LaserJet II printer as your printer. NOTE:
When you select either of the LaserJet printers the codes to
switch your printer to the landscape mode are sent automatically
as well as the printer reset codes upon exit. Therefore it is
NOT NECESSARY to put these codes into the init/exit string
options in the GRABCFG program.
Question - How does one go about using soft fonts on a LaserJet
printer?
- 3 -
Answer - First you have to configure GRAB to address the fonts
that you want to use. Below is described a method for installing
your soft font on your printer. We will assume that you have
assigned your font with a font ID of 0. In GRABCFG the
configuration program there is the "Printer" menu options. You
should have already used the "Type of printer" sub-menu selection
to tell GRAB which printer you are using. You will now use the
"Laserjet init fonts" sub-menu selection. In this section you
must enter the decimal codes that will tell GRAB to select your
font. In the first four number places enter 027 040 048 088.
This is the decimal values for the following:
027 = escape
040 = (
048 = 0 <- This is a zero and not the letter O.
088 = X
The next thing that will most likely have to be modified is the
left/right locations of your addresses. This will have to be a
trial and error method as all fonts use different spacing. This
is done by using the "Locations" menu selection and entering the
necessary numbers for changing, then exiting and testing the
changes.
To use the fonts you must have a landscape soft font downloaded
to your printer. This is done with a download utility that sends
your font file to the printer. There is a utility called
DOWNLOAD that will do this. The file along with two soft fonts
is in a file on this disk. A brief instruction file is called
FONTS.DOC and a self extracting file which contains DOWNLOAD and
two soft fonts is FONTS.EXE. These files are from Elfring Soft
Fonts - P.O. Box 61 - Wasco, Illinois 60183-0061 (312) 377-3520.
The utility, DOWNLOAD is a Shareware program. Download is simple
to use as in the above explanation we assigned the font zero for
the font ID. All that you have to do with DOWNLOAD is to type
DOWNLOAD <and the font file name>. An example would be "DOWNLOAD
TR100RPN.USL". The documentation that accompanies DOWNLOAD is
much more complete on using the soft fonts. REMEMBER - IF YOU
USE SOFT FONTS YOU WILL HAVE TO ADJUST THE HORIZONTAL SPACING IN
GRABCFG TO WHERE GRAB WILL PRINT THE ADDRESS.
Question - I am using a regular printer which is not a laser
printer. The return address prints normal, however the address
prints with double spacing. What is wrong?
Answer - You have a short carriage printer (only 80 columns
wide). What is happening is the location of the address, along
with the width of GRAB's default marker block (40 characters),
you are getting a "wrap around" effect. To cure this you may do
one of two different "cures". One is to shorten the marker block
so it is just long enough to cover your address before printing.
The other is a more efficient fix which is to move the "to
address" position to the left in the GRABCFG program. With the
second method it will always be ready when needed.

Question - Why does the comment line print lower when I hand type
in the address vs the regular GRAB mode?
Answer - The message line prints after the "TO ADDRESS" prints.
In the normal GRAB mode the address depth could be reduced to
three lines with the function key control. Then the comment line
prints one line after the last (third) line printed. In the case
of the "hand typed in" address there are six lines printed
regardless of how many lines that you have typed in.
Question - Do I have to type in the comment line before printing
each address?
Answer - No, it will be there until you delete it by entering the
comment entry window and press the <Esc> delete command.
Question - I had a comment typed in and on my Laserjet Plus it
did not print on the envelope. What did happen was the printer
requested another envelope. What happened.
Answer - The address was too long in depth and the comment line
was off of the page. In other words it printed on the second
page. To correct this problem raise the location of the "TO
ADDRESS" in the configuration program a few lines.
Question - I just received my new update to WordPerfect version
5.0 and am using it with an EGA monitor and video card. GRAB
used to work perfect on the old version. Now when I call up GRAB
while in WordPerfect the GRAB help screen is distorted so that it
looks like a message from outer space! What happened?
Answer - WordPerfect has changed the method of writing
information to the screen if you have an EGA monitor. They have
a 512 character display option that decodes any characters that
have the "bright" attribute set as some extended characters. You
will have to run GRABCFG to change the default colors to colors
that are not "bright". Any of the available seven basic colors
will suffice to work along with this new version of WordPerfect.
Question - I am using WordPerfect version 5.0 and I load GRAB and
WordPerfect with a batch file from my WP directory. The batch
file calls GRAB first then loads WordPerfect. The problem is
that GRAB does not seem to be loaded as I cannot access it. What
is my problem?
Answer - Version 5.0 of WordPerfect has added a program called
GRAB.COM to their distribution disks. What is happening is that
you have both a COM file and an EXE file of the same name. COM
files take presence over EXE files. This means that you are
loading the WordPerfect GRAB and not GRAB the Envelope Printer.
To keep this from happening rename the GRAB.COM file to
WPGRAB.COM. This will avoid the conflict of names and allow you
to load GRAB with no problem.

Question - I am from Canada and as you know our zip code are
different from those in the States. How can I use GRABDB with
your format of "#####-####"? You see we don't use a dash in our
zip codes and we have alpha characters.
Answer - GRABDB will detect the Canadian zip code after you type
it in. The field is "#####-####" and you should type your zip
code in as "V8W 3-C8##", ignoring the dash. After the initial
adding of this record GRABDB will detect the alpha characters and
reformat it properly for you.
Question - I just purchased a new Hewlett- Packard envelope tray
part number 92295F, how do I use it? It seems that when I tried
to use GRAB with the tray it did some strange things. The
printer gave me error messages, it printed on two envelopes, and
then GRAB gave me an error message.
Answer - The envelope tray uses completely different tray
selection commands, it uses different print locations, (That's
why it printed on two envelopes it did a form feed to the next
envelope.) and the printer also needs to be manually reset when
changing trays. You must make sure the printer has been reset
and that the GRAB instruction window shows that you have toggled
the LJII envelope tray selection with the <F2> key.
